    This paper investigates the effect of exchange rate volatility on US-UK bilateral trade flows. As part of econometric problems arising from a generated variable, we consider a special case when an ARCH type auxiliary model is used to measure uncertainty in the exchange rate and discuss a procedure for the correct inference of the OLS estimates of the primary equation in the second stage, which includes the generated variable.     Nonfrustrated magnetoelectric with incommensurate magnetic order in magnetic field

    We discuss a model nonfrustrated magnetoelectric in which strong enough magnetoelectric coupling produces incommensurate magnetic order leading to ferroelectricity. Properties of the magnetoelectric in magnetic field directed perpendicular to wave vector describing the spin helix are considered in detail. Analysis of classical energy shows that in contrast to naive expectation the onset of ferroelectricity takes place at a field Hc1H_{c1} that is lower than the saturation field Hc2H_{c2}. One has Hc1=Hc2H_{c1}=H_{c2} at strong enough magnetoelectric coupling. We show that at H=0 the ferroelectricity appears at T=TFE<TNT=T_{FE}<T_N.     Using convective flow splitting for the direct printing of fine copper lines

    Liquid ribbons of solutions of copper hexanoate in a volatile solvent were drawn on a glass slide using either fine glass capillaries or an ink jet printer. After solvent evaporation, the solute was observed to segregate into multiple pairs of stripes much narrower than the initial ribbon diameter. These stripes were then converted to pure copper by annealing. Surface profiles indicate that the thickness, width, and number of lines formed are strongly dependent on the solution viscosity and volume per unit length deposited. From flow visualization studies and surface profiling, we have found that evaporative cooling produces Bénard–Marangoni convection patterns which accrete the solute along two key boundaries of the flow, namely the three phase contact line and the outer edge of a stagnant region about the ribbon apex. These findings suggest that optimization of the deposition and evaporation process can be used to "write" fine metallic lines from a wider liquid precursor

    Cross-Kerr-based information transfer processes

    The realization of nonclassical states is an important task for many applications of quantum information processing. Usually, properly tailored interactions, different from goal to goal, are considered in order to accomplish specific tasks within the general framework of quantum state engineering. In this paper we remark on the flexibility of a cross-Kerr nonlinear coupling in hybrid systems as an important ingredient in the engineering of nonclassical states. The general scenario we consider is the implementation of high cross-Kerr nonlinearity in cavity-quantum electrodynamics. In this context, we discuss the possibility of performing entanglement transfer and swapping between a qubit and a continuous-variable state. The recently introduced concept of entanglement reciprocation is also considered and shown to be possible with our scheme. We reinterpret some of our results in terms of applications of a generalized Ising interaction to systems of different nature.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, RevTeX
